Chapter 9

It was a little after nine when they arrived at the hospital, a different policeman now on duty outside Jenna’s room.

A bleary-eyed and pale Rourke stood outside in the hallway drinking a bottle of water. There was also dark stubble on his chin, the jacket of his suit removed and his shirt and trousers creased.

To August, Rourke’s less-than-pristine appearance made him look more like Logan than he had yesterday.

She smiled at the two of them. “Did you used to play tricks on your parents when you were younger?”

“We tried.” Rourke gave an appreciative grin. “Unfortunately, our mother could tell us apart even if we swapped clothes.”

“Mothers are like that.” She nodded before sobering. “How’s Jenna?”

Rourke shrugged. “Still out of it. You can go in if you want to,” he invited. “I’m going to stay out here and continue stretching my legs for a while.”

“I’ll join you in a few minutes,” Logan assured when August glanced at him.

He had seemed a little preoccupied on the drive over here, and August hadn’t wanted to break the silence either, too aware still of the hours she had spent last night lying in bed beside his naked and aroused body. Her breasts and nipples were still tingling from where Logan had held and caressed them earlier.

Something she put firmly from her mind as she entered Jenna’s hospital room. Her friend’s bruises were even more livid today, a myriad of purple, black, and yellow, the latter showing that some of those bruises were older than others.

August felt a cold chill down her spine at the thought of how long and how often Jenna must have been beaten over the previous three days to have received so many bruises.

Beatings that had been meant for August.

Although she still had no idea why.

“August…?”

“Jenna!” August cried out her relief as she saw Jenna’s lids were open slits, her green eyes looking straight at August. “Oh my God, Jenna…!”
